Do You Need Drill and Impact Driver?

For most smaller DIY projects, a drill is what most people would need. Drill is great for drilling holes and setting smaller screws and lighter nuts/bolts. Drills are also much more precise and have more speed controls than an impact driver.

An impact driver comes in handy when you’re setting many fasteners like building a deck or fence or if the fasteners that you’re trying to remove are long or stuck. An impact driver is much easier on the users hands/wrist as the tool takes the brunt of the torque and force and won’t “twist” like a drill. Impact drivers are often used by mechanics to remove and install nuts and bolts when working on vehicles.

Do you need both drill and impact driver? That really depends on if you’re getting into heavier duty tasks that a drill can’t keep up with.

  1. As someone that just spent 45 days demo-ing and rebuilding a deck by himself as a regular joe DIYer, I fell in love with the impact. it didnt try to break my wrist everytime I was screwing in one of those timber screws or forgetting to switch off the max power on the drill. Also, the impact is so much smaller. It was the only way to get in between the 12″ OC joists with the 5-8″ timber screws. Yes, its loud but even my wife was able to drill in the screws with the impact where shouldnt couldnt with the drill.
